Tommy Emmanuel Live in KL 2015
Back by overwhelming demand, the two time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel will return to Malaysia in a one night only concert in October 2015 following his sold out concerts in KL from 2010 to 2012.
Tommy Emmanuel is one of the world’s finest guitarists and one of Australia most respected musicians having performed with hundreds of musical legend including Chet Atkins, Air Supply, Eric Clapton, Sir George Martin, John Denver, Joe Walsh, Stevie wonder, Tina Turner, Keith Urban, Hank Marvin (The Shadows) Les Paul and many more.
Tommy calls his unique guitar style ‘Fingerstyle’ which he uses all ten fingers much as a pianist does. He plays the bass lines, chords, melodies and harmonies simultaneously using the thumb and fingers of the right hand to play the multiple parts of a musical arrangement that would normally played by several band members.
Born into a musical family in 1955 in Australia, Tommy and his older brother Phil were considered child prodigies. He picks up his first guitar at the age 4 and was taught by his mother. He only learned and played by ear, without any formal lesson and had not even read music before.
He was already a working professional musician at the age 6 playing in his family band. Tommy played rhythm guitar while his older brother played lead guitar, alongside their brother Chris on drums and sister Virginia on slide guitar. The band was their sole income of the family for several years. By age 10, Tommy had tour across Australia. He also gave guitar lessons and has appeared in numerous musical competition television programs which was Tommy’s first rise to fame came when his family band “The Trailblazers won two televised talent contests and produced an EP.
In the late 70’s, Tommy left home in his early teens and moved to Sydney to pursue a professional career as a guitarist. He played in clubs all over the city and his guitar skills were on public display but not for long as he became well known as a session guitarist for completing his recording work in one take and he has recorded for some of the most popular performers in the era. His guitar work was featured on all the biggest hits from Air Supply in their smash album “Lost in Love”. In the early 80’s he joined the band “Dragon” one of the decade’s biggest band. In 1987, Dragon toured with Tina Turner on her “Break Every Rule” Tour.
Chet Atkins was Tommy’s early inspiration and he got the chance to play with his hero when they finally met in the 1980’s. Chet guided Tommy and they recorded an album together in 1997’s “The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World” where Tommy received his first Grammy award nomination.
Chet honored Tommy the rare title of “Certified Guitar Player” for his contribution to the art of “Fingerstyle “guitar playing. A rare citation awarded to only four other musicians in the world.
Tommy was nominated twice in the Grammy award after his second album “The Mystery” earned him another Grammy Nomination. He was voted Rolling Stones (Australia) “Most Popular Guitarist” for two consecutive and was recently chosen as “Favorite Acoustic Guitarist” for the second time by “Guitar Player” magazine. He also appeared at the Sydney 2000 Olympics Closing ceremonies with his brother Phil Emmanuel with 2.25 billion people around the world experienced the broadcast that evening.
In recent years, Tommy has been performing for more than 300 shows a year and has been touring throughout the different continents such as Europe, Asian, North America and Australia. He also hosts several “Tommy Fest” concerts where he invited other international musicians to share the stage in 4 days all out celebration of music.
In total, Tommy has recorded more than 20 musical recordings of solos, cover tunes, duets, and ensembles, originals for both acoustic and electric guitar. He has made 7 live performance DVD’s and several instruction DVD’s. He gives master classes regularly on the road.
Emmanuel’s flawless guitar skills and superb showmanship had never fail to amaze audiences and he had his fan base that continue to grow larger every year.
